Pilsner is a Porcelain type Garlic. This is a hardy variety that grows well on the NL Organics Farm.
The cloves are medium thick and elongated, and peel easily. Porcelain garlic usually has a white papery skin and this is true of Pilsner, although we'd argue that all our crops have a slightly thicker skin because they live here on the rock.
Like the summer beer that Pilsner garlic is named after, these cloves have bite in all the right ways. Refreshing, but not overpowering. It's subtle and not hot, and great to use in wild game, for stews & soups, and Pilsner is a great addition to any comfort food you are cooking. It's garlic flavour, but it's not overwhelming, and it would be one of the garlic flavours that most Newfoundland garlic eaters would recognize. We wouldn't go so far as to say it's the variety of choice for nan's in Atlantic Canada, but surely a few of us will taste this and remember warm afternoon's beside the wood stove.
Long roots keep this garlic healthy in the garden. Big scapes, and excellent storage make Pilsner something worth getting into your garden, or into your favourite comfort food.
